Economy
Value
Bought second hand in Feb 2002 for £4000 (dealer was about to send it to auction so I got it for a good price). As a second hand buy the value cannot be faulted.
Costs
Servicing costs and parts replacement almost zero, in 40,000 miles I have changed 2/3rds of the exhaust, 8 tyres and front brake pads. Shame it has been broken into twice - that was EXPENSIVE.

Driving
Very enjoyable to drive, good handling if a little soft at the edges, steering and gear change are so slick and effortless.
Performance
1.4 is clearly no sportscar engine but it will keep up with anything sensible up to about 50-60mph. Cruises at 80+ comfortably. Get the revs above 3,500 and it really starts to sing.

Living with it
Reliability
Can't fault it, only replacements have been wear and tear.
Image
I think it is a very stylish car but the colour (burgundy) is not to everyones tastes. Most people expect a Civic to be driven by an 80-yr old woman so I think they are surprised to see a younger man at the wheel!
Comfort
The ride is a little jittery, the seats are a shade soft and I would like a little more side support on them. Driving position is low slung by modern standards, and doors are long which can make access tricky.

Security and Service
Security
1997-era security was not as advanced as now. Has an immobiliser and central locking, but no alarm. Broken into twice after I left the stereo front on...
Service
Very little main dealer service, although they seem efficient. Specialist garages give satisfactory service.
