What are the running costs?

According to the official WLTP figures, the Honda HR-V claims 52.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 122g/km. These are very competitive for a mid-sized petrol-powered small family SUV.

This economy claim is easily achievable, along with Honda’s assertion that the hybrid system in the HR-V ‘achieves a higher proportion of electric drive time’ than other hybrids. We generally managed 53-ish mpg during our long-term test with the car, including regular hard acceleration on twisty country roads as well as coasting through sleepy towns and motorway driving.

Given this driving was mainly using the Normal drive mode, it’s an impressive result. In fact, the car returns well over 50mpg when driven with no real effort to drive economically, which is on-par with the advertised WLTP figures.

Servicing and warranty

The HR-V comes with Honda’s standard three-year/90,000-mile warranty. If you choose to extend this warranty other benefits come with it, including roadside assistance and home assistance. However, it’s getting left behind by its rivals’ longer, more generous offerings.

Honda recommends servicing the HR-V every 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first, and its dealers are highly rated in customer satisfaction surveys.

Reliability

  • Rock-solid build quality
  • No recalls as yet
  • No issues during our long-term test

Honda is virtually synonymous with reliable and long-lasting cars. The HR-V proves the firm is deserving of this status. It has received no recalls whatsoever, a rarity for a modern car with lots of complex parts.

Nothing went wrong with ours during its six-month long-term test.
