- Frequent servicing is recommended
How much does a Honda S2000 cost to run?
Two-seat roadsters are rarely cheap to run and the S2000 is no exception. While servicing rates at Honda dealers should be reasonable, the car does require maintenance every 9,000 miles. Insurance is the highest rating (group 20 originally), while the VTEC engine will return just 28mpg.
The S2000 scores badly on the eco front as well, and the VTEC engine emits 236g/km of CO2. As a result, it’s a relatively expensive car to tax, particularly if registered after 2005.
Is the Honda S2000 reliable?
This is where Honda excels and owners have experienced very few problems with the model since it was launched in 1999. As the cars get older and neglected, a few weaknesses have surfaced – but generally in terms of how well the car survives being abused.
With a 9,000rpm rev limit, the 2.0-litre engine needs good oil, an owner with mechanical sympathy and all service items kept on top of. Cam chain tensioners can fail with a characteristic fast clicking sound, and misfires can be caused by anything from old spark plugs to bent valves.
The S2000 is very sensitive to tyre pressures, so wayward steering can be down to under or over inflated tyres.
Worn CV boots and loose axle bolts can cause clicking and vibration from the rear.
