Hyundai Elantra Hatchback (2001-2006) engines, drive and performance

Three to choose from, a 1.6 and 2.0 petrol and 2.0 CRTD. The 1.6 should be adequate for most needs, the 2.0 offers a bit more pace, but both engines are a bit rough and not that economical. 2.0 CRTD is an old-school diesel and a bit noisy. It’s willing enough but not a great performer at high revs.
It’s all too easy to spin the wheels in the wet and there’s very little front-end grip. Prone to bodyroll, the steering lacks feel and feedback. Gearchange needs some work. Ride can be harsh around town and on poorly-laid roads, but is more comfortable (though quite wallowy) on the motorway.
