Hyundai Elantra Saloon (2001-2004) engines, drive and performance

The saloon only gets two engines: 1.6 and 2.0 petrols. The 2.0 CRTD isn’t available. The 1.6 is fine for most needs; the 2.0 offers a bit more pace, but both engines are a bit rough and not that economical.
There’s very little front-end grip, so it’s too easy to spin the wheels if you’re in the wet or using too many revs. There’s too much body lean and the gearbox is a bit clunky to use; steering lacks feel and feedback. Harsh town ride is improved for the motorway, although it’s still quite wallowy.
