Hyundai Ioniq Electric Hatchback (2016 - 2022) Premium SE Electric auto 5d Owner Review
Want to know everything there is to know about this car?
In their own words
Purchased this car second hand in 2023 unseen from a car supermarket about 50 miles from home. When I collected the car it was in great condition and for what I paid it’s without doubt the best value car I’ve ever owned.
It still achieves 190+ miles on a full charge, in summer it regularly exceeds 5 miles per kWh even with 3 adult passengers and the ac running. I usually drive in normal or sport mode, don’t really use eco or eco+ much. In winter (running winter tyres) I still see about 4 miles per kWh with passengers, the heating set at 22 degrees and the heated seats running. Most of my trips are under 100 miles so I don’t in any way drive the car to maximise range, yet the Ioniq still gives these excellent consumption figures. I believe the Ioniq EV is widely regarded as the efficiency king and I can well believe it.
I’m fortunate to be able to charge at home and doing so costs about 7.5p per kWh, so in electricity costs I’m paying just under 2p per mile to fuel the car. I do have a diesel second car, which I love too, and completely get that an EV doesn’t work for everyone, but for day to day running the Ioniq EV has to be one of the cheapest modes of weather proof transport around! Like most EVs depreciation was this cars achilles heel, however when purchased used for a fraction of its new price, with 2 years warranty left on the car and 5 remaining on the battery, for me it’s been amazing value.
Long term battery health seems extremely positive with the Ioniq too. I have access to quite an in depth scan tool (which can interrogate the battery BMS) and on my car the battery is still reporting a 100% state of health figure. Looking online this seems to be the norm with the Ioniq and with over 40,000 miles on the battery it still has no problems achieving it’s original claimed range. Granted the ioniq isn't the most EV I’ve ever driven, but as others say it doesn’t feel as slow as its 0-60 time of 9 seconds would suggest. It absolutely obliterates hills and its overtaking ability isn’t in any way lacking - overall the ioniq motor feels strong, silent and responsive.
Without doubt though the best bit about the ioniq is its space and standard equipment (especially on the Premium SE). Widescreen nav, CarPlay and android auto, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, radar cruise control, highway driving assist, auto led headlights, blind spot warning with and rear cross traffic alert, leather seats, driver’s memory seat, comfort entry and exit on drivers seat- the standard equipment just goes on and on.
I regularly carry 2/3 adult passengers and nobody ever has any space or comfort issues. The boot is big enough for shopping, this year 4 adults went away in the ioniq for a long weekend and all our luggage fit in the boot under the load cover.
I would whole heartedly recommend anyone considering a used EV to take a look at the Ioniq. If the range and size of the ioniq work for you its a fantastic option in the used EV market.
How reliable do you find the car?
No real faults at all - car was subject to a coolant recall, which the dealer had to do twice, but the car drove perfectly aside from a low coolant message.
Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
Absolutely brilliant car - far more spacious and comfortable than I was expecting it to be. The standard equipment levels are simply fantastic and everything works so well. The radar cruise control is one of the best I’ve ever used and coupled to the auto regen braking in normal driving it’s amazing at managing the regen strength by itself.
