    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

March 2004 I paid less than £10k for a manual 2000 V 3.0 V6 with 33,000 on the clock, full history with full leather and loads of other hop ups. Absolutely can't be beaten for a luxury second hand buy....but do your homework first.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

No 2 ways about it...the car likes a drink especially on short trips around town (22 mpg). Take it easy on a run and you'll return 30+. I only do about 8000 mls per year, so not a big issue. Servicing at main dealer is expensive, reliable.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very direct steering, magic carpet ride, surprisingly chuckable in corners for a big car. Manual gearbox is fine if you get a good (unabused) one.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Brilliant acceleration, sub 7 seconds if you do it right. Will pull in 5th from 30mph without making a sound.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Only two things have gone wrong, the header tank cracked and needed replacing and the anti roll bar bushes and drop links were all changed when the front end developed a rattle...both are common faults. Other than that nothing in 10 months.

People think you've won the lottery. A bit of an old man's car image but if that means people who think good has to be German won't buy one, all the better.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

The reason I bought the car..like your favourite leather armchair with a wheel at each corner and a rocket strapped to it. Boot space only let down, but split/fold rear seat helps a lot.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

From reviews I've read on car security the S-Type is always highly rated and takes a long time for the "professionals" to gain access. Comprehensive airbags.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

They charge a fortune but treat you right. Discount club available for owners of older cars.
