12-year-old Jaguar XKs with moderate mileage can now be bought for under £10,000. You will get a lot of car for relatively little money - but be sure to have a generous back-up fund for running costs. These were £70,000 cars when new, and you can't maintain a £70,000 car on a shoestring. To start - annual road tax is well over £500. A set of decent tyres will cost you well over £1000. Routine servicing is not silly-money when done by a good Jaguar independent, but if anything goes wrong, expect BIG bills. Insurance will be steep for some people. But the reward of owning an XK is HUGE. Even when standing still, the XK is absolutely gorgeous to look at - from every angle. Get in one, and you will be sitting on superbly comfortable electric-adjustable seats and surrounded by quality leather, with beautiful wood or aluminium trimmings. Get gently underway, and the car is simply sensational. The ride is perfection. The gearbox silky smooth. The engine quietly powerful. You'll be impressed by the standard and effective dual-zone climate control and touch-screen sat-nav. The multi-change CD player is standard too. Press on a bit, and things get even better. The acceleration and braking ability will amaze you, while the computer-controlled dampers and VERY wide tyres glue the XK to the road. Use the sequential-shift steering wheel paddles to control the gearbox, and listen to that intoxicating V8 roar as you power towards the red line. My Jaguar XK is without doubt the best car I have ever owned.
