Jeep Cherokee 2.5 Sport 5d (1996/P) Owner Review

Economy
Value
So cheap to buy in comparision to other 4x4s. Mine has stayed at roughly the same price through 20,000 miles and a year of driving.
Costs
I average 28 to the gallon - That's better than a 2.5 5-Series BMW! Parts are as cheap as Land Rover, make sure you shop around for them. Beware Jeep and non-Jeep garages I have had bad advice that could have cost me more than £1,000 extra on a bill!

On the road
Driving
Solidly built and surefooted. I've taken this car off-road and in the snow. I used to have a problem with the back end slipping in the wet, but just putting it into 4-wheel drive solves the problem and exercises the gearboxes. Comfy, practical and easy.
Performance
Heavy but adequate. Good trade between economy and power.

Living with it
Reliability
Universal joints went on the front at 70,000 miles. Both Jeep and non-dealer garages swear that the whole axle needs changing - Don't believe a word of it and go to PMD Essentials online. The parts are around £50 and take 2-3 hours to fit. No problem.
Image
She's getting old, but she's still a beast. I still get asked the usual questions: Where can I get one, what's it like on fuel blah, blah etc.
Comfort
Nice - Shame about the dark dashboard - could do with more lights so you can find the knobs.

Security and Service
Security
Never had a problem other than the default self-setting function. I had a motorbike with the same 'feature' and made sure I never had it on a bike again!
Service
Fantastic. Had a brake safety recall and got new discs - had a problem and all was sorted under warranty. Great service and I was really looked after.
