The Grand Cherokee requires servicing on a yearly basis, or every 12,500 miles, which is similar to competitors. The new diesel engine, like the previous models, has a timing chain which should last the life of the vehicle.
Fuel economy is quoted as being a reasonable 38mpg so Jeep Grand Cherokee running costs won’t be be as onerous as you might think. Jeeps tend to depreciate quite heavily but the company is working hard on its brand and residual values aren’t as bad as they used to be. It’s important to bear this in mind, however, if you only intend to own the car for a short period.
Also, if you’re looking at buying one used, remember to consider the cost of new tyres. If all four are due for replacement then you could be due a very expensive bill.
The latest 3.0-litre diesel engine found in the Grand Cherokee is much improved compared to the older generation, emitting 198g/km of CO2 compared to 218g/km of CO2. Much of that improvement has come from the new eight-speed automatic gearbox though.
Still, this means that the Jeep Grand Cherokee emissions are competitive – it’s cleaner than Land Rover’s Discovery, which emits 230g/km of CO2 from its 3.0-litre diesel. Alternatives like the Volkswagen Touareg, however, offer lower emissions of around 195g/km of CO2. The difference in yearly tax prices, however, is relatively minor.
Average economy has also been improved to a claimed 38mpg which is on a par with other competitors and not unreasonable for a vehicle of its size and performance.
The Grand Cherokee is based on the same platform as the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class, so buyers should have little to fear about any major reliability issues.
The previous generation of Grand Cherokee suffered from only a few minor issues so the new model should continue, if not improve on, this trend.
All models are covered by a three-year/60,000 miles warranty so if you have Jeep Grand Cherokee reliability problems you do have some peace of mind.
