Jeep Wrangler Hardtop (1993-2005) engines, drive and performance

The 2.5 was discontinued in 2000, leaving only the 4.0. It has a 0-60mph time of 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 108mph. It pulls well, but is coarse and noisy at speed, capable off-road but unpleasant for motorway driving. Then there’s the fuel consumption. Don’t expect any more than 25mpg – even less if you drive mainly in town.
If you’re using Wrangler for what it’s intended for (off-roading), you’ll find that it’s a star, with lots of ground clearance and a suspension set-up that allows you to tackle most terrains. It’s appalling on the road, with a choppy ride, imprecise steering and a poor gearchange.
