Kia EV6 boot space, practicality and safety
- Loads of room front and rear
- Boot space is average for the class
- Wild styling restricts visibility
How much space is there?
Loads. At least for passengers. We’ll elaborate. Because the Kia EV6 is so vast and it has a completely flat floor, it has plenty of space in its cabin. Front seat passengers have ample leg and elbow room – and those in the rear are similarly well catered for due to the width of the bench and the lack of a transmission tunnel.
It’s worth specifying a sunroof, too. Basic EV6s are a little dark inside – the black upholstery absorbs a lot of light, and the swoopy styling means the windows aren’t exactly enormous. The sunroof allows for a splash of extra daylight to enter the cabin.
Considering it’s a technically a coupe, there’s a surprising amount of headroom. Our tallest tester found weak point, though. He felt the windscreen pillar was a little too close to be comfortable – and if he readjusted himself in his seat or leaned forward to grab something from the door card, he’d contact it with his forehead.
Boot space and storage
The EV6 has a large boot, but it’s far from being the largest in its class. It measures 490 litres with the rear seats in place, is a long way behind the 570 litres of space you get in the Skoda Enyaq Coupe. Still, that’s more than enough space for a clutch of suitcases.
You also get a variable-height boot floor that allows you to eliminate the loading lip and every EV6 has some extra storage under the bonnet – although the amount of space it offers varies depending on the model. The rear-wheel drive models have 52 litres of space, but four-wheel drive cars (like the one we tested) only have 20 litres. In any case, though, that’s ample room for the car’s charging cables.
Is it easy to park?
The EV6 is quite a large car. It’s similar in size to the Skoda Octavia and, because of its narrow windows and swoopy styling, it’s not particularly easy to see out of. That means you need to pay close attention when shuffling it into UK parking spaces.
However, Kia makes your job a little easier with the sheer amount of technology it provides you. Even the most basic EV6 Air is fitted with parking sensors and a reversing camera, while the range-topping GT-Line S model has a 360-degree parking camera and a snazzy self-parking function that can steer the car into end-on and parallel spaces.
Safety
- Five-star safety rating (from 2022)
- Facelifted car is even safer than before
- Safety technology is irritating, though
The Kia EV6 was last crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2022 – and the car’s wreckages were carted out of the facility wearing five-star ratings. Normally, we’d caveat a score from 2022 with a reminder that Euro NCAP has since tightened up its regulations, but we’re less concerned about the changing safety of the EV6.
That’s because Kia made it even safer when it facelifted the car. The brand added a few extra airbags and even strengthened up its B-pillar, so it’s confident the EV6 would perform even better if were crash-tested again today. We like that. It’s diligent.
Kia was also forced to fit a load of additional driver assistance technology to keep EU legislators happy, which we’re far less pleased about. They’re all infuriating.
There’s now a mandatory speed limit warning system, lane-keeping assist and a driver monitoring camera. The first system bongs every time the speed limit changes or if you accidentally stray 1mph over the posted maximum. The second chimes if you so much as graze a white line and the last one will beep if you look at your mirror, check your navigation instructions for too long or even wear a pair of sunglasses.
Drive the new EV6 through a series of small, unfamiliar towns (with narrow roads and constantly shifting speed limits) and the dashboard will send out enough klaxons to force you into a swearing fit after just 10 miles. What’s even worse is the off switches are all buried within several infotainment sub-menus.
