What are the running costs

There’s no such thing as an inefficient Niro, with even the regular hybrid managing mid-60s mpg according to official figures. You won’t quite get that much in the real world, but over 50mpg should be achievable. You’d need to look at a Toyota CH-R or Renault Captur hybrid to get near those figures with petrol power.

The plug-in hybrid is a lot pricier to buy but offers company car users a far lower monthly BIK payment. That’s especially true of 2 trim which sits in a lower tax bracket than the 3 and 4. You’ll need to run on electricity an awful lot to get near the 300-mile-plus mpg figure, though. The 40-mile electric-only range on 2 and 38 miles of other models should help.

You won’t have to worry about charging up the normal Niro hybrid, but the plug-in takes around 3.5 hours to charge on a 7.4kW wallbox. Unfortunately, it can’t handle a faster charge than that.

Servicing and warranty

You can book a service for your Kia online or if you want more convenience, opt for a fixed price service plan. This allows you to pay in advance to avoid any hefty bills, although Kias are generally quite trouble-free.

Even if there are issues, all Kias are covered by a standard seven-year or 100,000 mile warranty. As an added bonus, this is transferrable to the next owner of the car should you decide to sell.

Reliability

  • Kia has a good record
  • No recalls at the time of writing
  • Too early to know for sure

The previous generation Niro had a couple of recalls early on, but so far the current car is clear. Seeing as there are some carry-over parts, we’d hope it would stay that way although it really is too early to say at the time of writing.

These carry-overs and Kia’s general reputation for reliability should mean a trouble free experience, especially as Parkers owner reviews of the old car will generally favourable with the odd mild gripe.
