Like Ferrari and McLaren, Lamborghini isn’t listed under Euro NCAP’s crash-test ratings. However, because it’s built around a carbonfibre passenger cell, the Aventador is inherently strong and stiff, which should make it very safe in the event of an accident.

While the occupants sit inside the cabonfibre cell, the engine and suspension components are supported by aluminium frames front and rear. These aluminium structures provide deformable crash structures, absorbing energy while also being cheaper to repair than carbonfibre. Even in quite heavy impacts, the carbonfibre passenger cell can remain undamaged.

Should the worst happen, driver, passenger and side airbags are also fitted as standard to protect occupants.

The Aventador scores highly when it comes to active safety features – equipment that helps the driver avoid accidents. Carbon-ceramic brakes provide fierce stopping power, and the all-wheel-drive system also means you’re less likely to get into trouble in the first place, offering huge reserves of grip that’s a match for the hugely powerful mid-mounted V12 engine.

Like all new cars, anti-lock brakes and a stability control system are fitted as standard, so even if you do have to swerve or stop violently, there’s a good chance the electronics will step in to stop the Aventador sliding out of control.

Advanced driver-assistance systems such as automatic emergency braking and drowsiness detection technology are not fitted, however, and the Aventador is a little behind the curve in this respect. Most supercars are.

While bootspace is probably not at the forefront of you mind when you purchase an exotic Italian supercar like a Lamborghini Aventador, it’s heartening to know there is a concession to practicality in the form of a front luggage compartment, good for a couple of squashy overnight bags.

Obviously there are only two seats and no room in the back because there’s a massive V12 there. In short, you’ll want to take something else to B&Q.

It’s very wide of course and not particularly easy to see out of so for town driving you’ll want to go carefully. There is a nose-lift function though to help navigate speed bumps.

Those scissor doors not only look cool but enable you to get in and out reasonably easy in a car park – if they opened conventionally you’d need a lot of space either side.
