-
Economy
Value
Defender is best value of any large 4x4.
Costs
Proper servicing is dear. Needs it if used in remote areas.
-
On the road
Driving
On road it is adequate. Off-road it is superb. Beats all other standard large 4x4s.
Performance
Fast enough, the turbo-diesel is very economical indeed.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Totally reliable if you service it. Gearbox a little weak.
Image
Great if you are a country or adventure type.
Comfort
On rough to extreme tracks it's the best, though leaks dust badly. Handles well on bitumen, but is a bit noisy for these days.

Security and Service
Security
Pretty damn easy to break in. I did so once with a palm frond!
Service
Dealer servicing was not only too dear, but also poor, and explanations lousy, service non-existent.
