After a lot of deliberation we replaced our 2015 Discovery 4 HSE Luxury that had provided five years of trouble free service and was still in great condition with only 30K miles with the latest Discovery 5 HSE Luxury with the 306hp 3.0 litre diesel. When the Discovery 5 was launched in 2017 there were several areas we were not keen on including having the same 254hp diesel as the old model and the specifications were lacking in some areas but with the later upgrades to both engine and standard specification and with the upcoming tax changes from 01st April we decided the time was right. Initially we chose a grey paint finish and wanted roof bars, privacy glass and the design pack in addition to the standard specification and our local JLR dealer found one that suited and we agreed on a delivery date of 01st March 2020. Unfortunately the dealer who had originally ordered the vehicle would not release it even though they had not sold it and whilst our dealer said they would order another to the same specification and price this would miss the 01st April deadline for the tax changes. After some tough negotiations we agreed to take an unregistered vehicle that was in their showroom that was Santorini Black and as well as having the options we wanted also had 22" wheels, electric side steps and the fridge. We also managed to include mud flaps and a boot liner. What a beast!
The vehicle is impressive to look at, luxurious, very comfortable and much quieter and nicer to drive than the previous D4. The only disappointment is that the HSE Luxury does not have a television receiver as standard (unlike our D4) and this cannot be retrofitted. The additional space for the middle row seats and four zone A/C is appreciated as is the rear electric tailgate. If I had the chance now I would stay with the standard 21" wheels as even with air suspension the 22" options provide a harsh ride on poor road surfaces and are expensive at over £2K
Unfortunately due to lockdown we have been very restricted with mileage and now look forward to a couple of good runs to the West Country this summer when we expect the MPG to improve. Highly recommended and worth a test drive. Of course once you have owned a Disco and had no issues it is very difficult to consider moving back to a more normal sized vehicle.
