Value
I am replacing and as the new freelander is some time away, I looked at X3 - Comparable X3 was £8k more. Review on this site compares Freelander to Rav4 - I think that the Freelander is a class above these smaller 4X4s.
Costs
Service costs not cheap but comparable for other cars in cost bracket.

On the road
Driving
Excellent visibility - big windscreen makes it a bit of a goldfish bowl. High up means that it does wallow in corners, engine is responsive, power steering and cruise control etc make it a bit of a no brainer!
Performance
It's not a Ferrari, but can't ask for any better speed etc. In clutchless manual transmission, it flies.

Living with it
Reliability
Have had an engine management problem which causes the engin revs to go funny - appears about once a year, but does not cause problems. Not other issues other than that - 99% reliably.
Image
It's a nice reasonably sized 4x4 with good all round performance. The interior equipment is a generation out of date though - needs trip computer and climate control
Comfort
Opted for the 3 door, as the 4 door was tight with leg room etc - fine for 4 adults and all luggage going skiing.

Security and Service
Security
Tyre stolen off back but never broken into. Alarm has worked fine.
Service
The landrover dealers are pretty useless

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
A sensor failed on the engine management system which led to the revs go a bit haywire. Was solved by switching the engine off for 30 minutes. Sensor was replaced, but once or twice a year the engine goes a bit iffy - solved by the engine cooling down.
