Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2013 - 2022) 3.0 SDV6 HSE 5d Auto Owner Review
Want to know everything there is to know about this car?
In their own words
Horrendous experience from start to finish:
(1) Bought an approved used Range Rover Sport (L494) from Inchcape York, vehicle was not MOT’d in the dealership (forgotten), and when brought back for MOT it failed on several counts. Turned out the 165 point approved used inspection was pointless as it required several £k’s worth of work done just to be up to fill MOT standard, complaints not taken seriously.
(2) The vehicle has an approved three years extended warranty on it from Land Rover. But it turns out this does not cover items that Land Rover “know” are defective or can fail (such as engines), and Land Rover will do nothing as it is out of manufacturers warranty. The “approved used warranty” is marketed and branded by Land Rover but provided by Car Care Plan. Once you have paid they don’t care any more.
(3) Took the car in for a scheduled service and as part of that service it needed the transfer box oil changing. My car has the single speed box and takes 0.75 litre of Castrol BOT 850 oil for the Torsen centre differential. Inchcape charged me for 2 litres of a different oil, when queried it turned out they had put the wrong oil in the transfer box (oil for the dual speed box). If I had not noticed, the centre differential would have worn out prematurely. Oil was changed again free of charge but I did not get the price reduced as it should have been, gave up on this. Can’t help wondering how many cars have the wrong oil in them?
(4) I contracted for the InControl remote and secure services at £260 per year as my insurer requires theft tracking and protection. Recently JLR have “upgraded” their iOS app and worse of all their backend services and this service no longer works properly with my Telematics Control Unit. (It used to work fine). JLR’s response is for me to change the TCU at a cost of £1,427, although they will not guarantee it will work. Extended warranty does not cover this as the TCU has not failed. My dealer and I have tested this issue with other similar aged Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports and they all have the same problem. So we have proved it is a JLR system problem. JLR customer service states:
“The TCU (Telematics Control Unit) has not failed, it is no longer compatible with the new In Control software (this is an In Control Application issue, not a Jaguar Land Rover software induced issue), so the replacement would not be covered by warranty (Vehicle or extended). Jaguar Land Rover have the right to amend, enhance or withdraw services as deemed necessary to the business, Jaguar Land Rover support vehicles through the 3 year warranty and where upgrades are required during this period, they are provided. Extended warranty provides additional cover for any components that fail as a result of a manufacturing defect after the manufacturers vehicle warranty has expired, up until the expiration of the extended warranty. Extended warranty does not cover components that have not failed as above. Whilst I fully appreciate that this may not be the response in which you were hoping for but regrettably this does outline Jaguar Land Rovers full and final position, if you do remain unhappy with this you will need to seek further Third Party advice.”
So everyone with a 2016 or earlier car may be paying for a service that no longer works (and may not be aware it no longer works) and to make it work needs to pay for a TCU upgrade costing £1,427 that JLR states may not even work! I quote:
“Jaguar Land Rover are unable to confirm at this time that the replacement will rectify the concern but this is believed to be correct and has been outlined by the Telematics Team.”
Totally unacceptable! Never again.
