Range Rover verdict
Should you buy one?
Oh, yes. This is the king of the hill when it comes to top-end SUVs, beating the Bentley Bentayga and Mercedes-Benz GLS. It’s also good enough to challenge (and beat) more traditional luxury cars such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8. It has such a huge range of talents, and is so appealing that it’s hard not to recommend, even if there are still some question marks over its maker’s ability to deliver reliable vehicles.
This new Range Rover has taken great strides over the outgoing car, which was far from being ready for the scrapheap. It’s easier on the eye inside and out, it’s also infinitely more capable and rewarding to drive on the road, no less capable off it, roomier, more practical and quieter.
Sure, a BMW X7 is more engaging to drive and a Rolls-Royce Cullinan more opulent (as it should be considering its astronomical price), but the Range Rover has fewer flaws than either. Competition among luxury SUVs might be fierce, but this is the new class champion, and if you’re tempted to buy one, you can check out what Range Rovers are on offer in Parkers Cars for Sale.
What we like
The interior is a masterclass of restrained design and beautiful material choices. On the road, it puts in a great performance, while driving the wheels off all of its rivals (aside from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class) off road.
What we don’t like
All of this ability comes at a price, and that is augmented hugely once you start ticking the options list. The elephant in the room – reliability – is also an ever-present worry. Range Rover’s decision to trim its rotary climate control dials off the car’s interior was a mistake, too.
