Economy
Value
Prices were hit by the Series III Range Rover when it was launched. Shame I bought mine in 2000, really... Frightening depreciation from new, but older models have stabilised now, and seem to be holding steady. Lots of car for the money.
Costs
Don't expect to run a Rangie on a shoestring! Parts are affordable (always ask the dealer for a discount - up to 35% is usually available). Dealer labour/servicing is tragically high. DIY servicing/repair is straightforward, contrary to popular belief.

On the road
Driving
Air suspension provides good handling for such a big car. Fair amount of body roll, but you'll loose your composure before the car does! Steering box + 255 section tyres = No feedback from steering. Overall a satifying and very relaxing drive.
Performance
BMW 2.5TDS is underpowered in standard tune (autos are hopeless). Go for a manual 'box and install a Superchip or Van Aarken performance upgrade, followed by a good dose of Slick 50 in the engine oil. Performance then on a par with 4.0 V8, but with 27mpg

Living with it
Reliability
Big and complex car with lots to go wrong. And it will. LR build quality varies (up to about '99 when BMW/Ford influence started to take hold). Watch out for manual gearbox bearings, air suspension faults, poor servicing.

It's a Range Rover. It's the best. You need more?!
Comfort
The P38 is THE most luxurious and comfortable 4x4 you can buy, bar the Series III Range Rover. Journeys are always a pleasure and you'll arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Security and Service
Security
Thatcham I alarm/immobiliser as standard. Early cars suffer from interference when parked near pylons, transmitters, netal fences etc., and may fail to unlock by remote. Later ones have improved receiver and are OK. Learn the keycode, just in case!
Service
Dealers always helpful and prepared to give discount on parts if you ask - I've even borrowed specialist tools from my local franchise to complete a job. Most independant specialists now have equipment to service the various computers on board.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
None that weren't self-inflicted! (Caution: Driving through deep water can result in bent con-rods, cracked pistons and a broken crankshaft!)
Other
Air suspension compressor failed. Cautionary note: Relay RL20 (part YWB10012L) can fail closed and over stress the compressor and valve block. Valves CAN be rebuilt (LR will tell you they can't), but you'll still be looking at £400+. The relay is £5...
