The Gs was awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating for crash protection and a four-star rating for child protection. It features a high level of safety kit including ten airbags, ABS, traction and stability control and seatbelt pre-tensioners. Range topping models also get a crash-sensing system (it’s optional on lesser models) that uses the radar from the adaptive cruise control system.

If it detects that a crash is likely, it tightens the seatbelts and gets the brakes ready for emergency braking. All models have keyless entry and start, so the car senses the key in your bag or pocket as you approach, unlocks itself and you start it with a button on the dash.

Although reasonably large, the boot on the 300 and 430 can be difficult to access, because of the shape of the bootlid. It’s rather narrow and can be difficult to load. However, the boot does have a self-closing function, eliminating the need to slam it shut. The 450h has less luggage room as it’s eaten up by the rechargeable batteries – these take up 150-litres and as a result space is reduced to just 280-litres.

However a special set of luggage, designed to make the most of the available space, is offered and the four-piece range will hold plenty.
