Should you buy one?

The Lexus RX has been around for a while now and is nearing the end of its lifespan. But it still offers a surprisingly compelling package if you consider the ownership proposition – buy an RX at the start of your retirement and it’ll probably still be going long after you’re past driving it.

More modern rivals do have some points going for them that the RX can’t match, though. The 3.5-litre V6 hybrid powertrain feels old and doesn’t return particularly impressive fuel economy, and the infotainment offering is now very severely sub-par compared with other luxury SUVs.

Plus, rivals like the BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne have shown that it’s possible to make a big luxury SUV comfortable and fun to drive.

What we like

With a ten-year warranty and unparalleled dealer service owning a Lexus RX should be a frictionless experience.

What we don’t like

The engine feels elderly now, and the infotainment is eclipsed by even current-gen superminis let alone rival luxury SUVs.
