Lotus Elise 2d (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
For the money, there is no more capable B-road car except perhaps a Caterham.
Costs
Cheap to buy, but needs constant fettling to keep it in top order. Insurance expensive for the performance on offer. Amazingly frugal - never less than 35 mpg and usually more than 40!

On the road
Driving
It's a cliché, but this car is like a go-kart. Direct steering, astonishing grip, firm ride and makes you smile. Unconvinced about unservoed brakes for road use, but that's my preference talking.
Performance
Fast off the mark, but nothing special over 60 mph. K-series engine is sweet and responsive though. Car could easily handle more.

Living with it
Reliability
Engine good, the rest awful.
Image
Different, but not as flash as a BMW or Mercedes. Doesn't get vandalised. People let you out. Other Lotus drivers flash and wave cheerily.
Comfort
OK once in. Seats surprisingly comfy and a great driving position. Noise levels high. Passable heater. No creature comforts, but who'd have it any other way? You need to be a contortionist to get in and out easily with the roof up.

Security and Service
Security
Good for a soft top. Quick release Momo steering wheel and a Cobra Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser (until it broke). Used it every day for 2 years, parked it on the streets and nobody touched it.
Service
Too many known issues and official dealers not particularly interested. Use a good independent.
