The GranTurismo is an exotic car, so expect to meet running costs to match. Fuel economy is just 19mpg (17mpg on the S) and emissions are sky high for the launch cars.

Eventually, as technology improved across the car industry, the GranTurismo was caught standing still. With fuel economy on the 2017 cars an unimproved 19mpg, it’s looking decidedly poor in this regard.

We’ve got first-hand experience of a far more powerful Audi R8 delivering better fuel economy over a weekend than Maserati claims after laboratory testing. You can expect closer to 15mpg in the real world. 

Don’t expect any let-up here from the tax man either – CO2 output of 337g/km looks decidedly old-fashioned in 2017 and you’ll pay for it in VED bills.

Servicing and maintenance costs are on the ‘specialist’ end of the scale too – there aren’t many Maserati dealerships and those you can find won’t be shy about charging you a lot of money for the privilege of having them work on your car.

However, the only silver lining here is that the GranTurismo has relatively strong resale values. Our accurate pricing data shows that if you bought a new car in 2017 you’d be looking at retaining 48% of the car’s value after three years and 30,000 miles. An equivalent Bentley Continental GT would retain 44%.

V8 petrol engines and sporty performance mean the GranTurismo has high fuel consumption and high carbon dioxide emissions. It is significantly higher than many rivals that have similar performance credentials. Upon launch in 2007 the standard model emitted 330g/km of CO2 while the S was even worse with an output of 387g/km.

Even in 2017 when the GranTurismo was facelifted in far more CO2-concious times, the output still measured 337g/km, which is far higher than a lot of rival cars.

A Maserati GranTurismo and the word ‘reliability’ might not seem like the closest of bedfellows, but in the main we don’t think you’ll have too many issues as long as you spend the time and money to take proper care of your car.

Getting annual services at a main dealer is a good idea just to retain that all-important peace of mind.

We’ve seen a handful of owners’ reviews on Parkers detailing some issues having been fixed during an official recall, but there are no anecdotal problems to highlight here.
