Other Mazda 3 (2009 - 2013) models:

  • Summary

    3 out of 5 3.0

What does this car say about you?

That I like stylish cars I hope - its a great looking car.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

    That its a good looker.

Would you buy this car again and why?

No - the DPF thing has put me off diesels and there are little niggles with this 3 - the heated seat controls are ahead of the gear stick, so you have to take your eyes off the road to switch it on or off. The cruise control needs to be switched on (as in "available to use") every time you restart the car, which is stupid. And the fuel economy is disappointing, compared to my 8 year old Accord.

What are you likely to buy next?

Not a clue to be honest but it won't be a modern diesel. Clearly with the DPF issues they're not designed for those who make lots of short trips now. Petrol for me from now on.

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchised

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £8,995

When did you buy the car?

    September 2014

Did you get a good deal and why?

Yes. Price had dropped a thousand. Got 12 months tax and warranty too.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Wanted a diesel for the economy after having a 2006 2.2 diesel Accord for several years. Also wanted it well spec'ed.

    What was the dealer like?

Mixed. Got a good trade in on my Accord and a good run through of features. But then the minor paint issues weren't dealt with as promised - they did fix later. Also got me a parcel shelf FOC when the car was supplied without.

  • Driving it

    4 out of 5 4.0

    What's it like to drive?

Its got a powerful engine but it needs winding up a bit to get the best out of it. Nowhere near as economical as my Accord was, which is really disappointing. It is however, more powerful and I probably drive it a bit harder.

    What's it like to park?

I don't find it that easy, despite the parking sensors.

  • Living with it

    3 out of 5 3.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

My last diesel was pre 2009 change in EU regs so had no idea about DPFs. I do lots of short commute journeys during the week and have just had to have an oil and filter change after 5000 miles due to the DPF filter problem these Mazdas have (google it! I wish I had!). Ridiculous. Mazda's solution is to "drive it more". So its going.

What's most practical about your car?

Flat entry into the boot, so easy loading. And the car is very roomy - seemed a far roomier driving position than a similar age 6 I sat in.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The heated windscreen, cruise control and rear parking sensors.
