Mazda 3 Hatchback (2009-2013) verdict
Should I buy a used Mazda3?
Yes. The Mazda3 is a great little hatchback, though at first glance it’s less obvious than the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus or Peugeot 308. The weakest model is the one that has an engine in common with both the Ford and the Peugeot and inevitably, was quite popular when new – but the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel versions are well worth seeking out.
Owners really don’t seem to have many problems with them, other than routine wear or consequences of neglect, and it’s a sharper drive than the already good Ford Focus. Obscurity means used prices are relatively suppressed, too.
What we like about the Mazda3
Affordable, engaging to drive and with a good reputation for reliability, the Mazda3 is a really likeable used family car with generally low running costs.
What we don’t like
Rust protection is still a weak point, and the 1.6-litre diesel keeps the problems it’s known for in Peugeot, Ford and Volvo installations. Technology is quite dated – but it’s easily upgraded.
