Other Mazda 3 (2004 - 2008) models:

  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

That I prioritise performance over image, and want a fast car that doesn't attract attention, and offers value for money.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

General approval, especially as it's exceptionally civilised for passengers as hot hatches go.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes; it's a cross between a hot hatch and an executive hatch, and a bargain when you consider that discounts are available. Depreciation won't be the greatest, but it feels like a long-term proposition at the moment.

What are you likely to buy next?

Something that combines the same qualities of performance, quality, value and good engineering. Probably not a current model.

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchise

Did you buy this car new?

    Yes

    What price did you pay?

    £17,950

When did you buy the car?

    February 2007

Did you get a good deal and why?

I got a good deal via an internet broker. The car was an unused demo, and mine was the first name on the registration document.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Discreet perfornance, Mazda quality and reliability, equipment and value for money

    What was the dealer like?

    Efficient and professional

  • Driving it

    4 out of 5 4.0

    What's it like to drive?

Extremely easy to drive, and equally easy to drive fast. Quick steering, strong brakes, and the turbo provides excellent performance - especially from third gear on - with very little lag. The ride / handling balance is very well judged, and ideal for UK roads.

    What's it like to park?

Incredibly easy after my old Civic Type-R. Rear visibility isn't great, as with any modern hatch, but otherwise no issues.

  • Living with it

    4 out of 5 4.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Nothing whatsoever, unless you count a couple of unfortunate punctures; expensive as the Bridgestones come in at £130 a time.

What's most practical about your car?

A five-door hot hatch is relatively unusual, but makes the car easier to live with day-to-day. The cabin is spacious and the ergonomics are good.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The very efficient climate control and the surprisingly good BOSE 6-disc CD changer. HID lights are pretty good too.
