Mazda 323 Fastback (1989-)
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Got heaps for the price I paid. It is cheaper than the hatch and more fun to drive. Extra comforts are not reflected in price.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Previous owner hadn't looked after engine - needed a lot of work, however still worked out fairly cheap for what I got. Parts are cheap but are hardish to come by because of the age of the vehicle. Uses more gas than the 1.6 but is still economical.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Has quick acceleration and handles corners well. Fun on an open road. Tows the trailer well.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Accelerates much faster than an Integra and corners better too. Steering is very responsive and has good feel. Gearbox makes changes easy to get quick. Can't see why it isn't more popular among boy-racers.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Bought the car cheap - interior was nice but prev. owner hadn't looked after the engine, however after spending a lot of money fixing the engine up and a regular service it has never broken down.

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Looks shabby next to new cars, however the styling makes it a real head turner if it's done up. Has a neat old school, "Back to the Future" style to it.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

The Bucket-style seats are very comfortable. The car has many mod-cons. Car has too much road noise as Mazda didn't put in enough sound dampening (if any) - this is easily fixed if prepared to spend time + money.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Central Locking - that's all! I don't mind as I'm about to get an aftermarket alarm to protect my sound gear. The locks are very secure - A whole 7th form class of boys couldn't break into the car - tried everything short of smashing the windows.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Have used local mechanic for services etc. Have never used Mazda so can't speak about their service.

Sunroof sticks - needs a push to open. New drivers window doesn't fit right and jams.
