Mazda 323 Hatchback 1.3i LX 3d (1992/K) Owner Review

Economy
Value
The worst purchase I've ever made. It did its best to bankrupt me at every turn. It was 'a learning experience'.
Costs
It's in the lower tax band, but insurance is NOT cheap at group 8. Parts are near-impossible to get hold of from anywhere but the main dealer, so you pay through the nose. Best to buy one of the fastbacks instead for more widely-available parts.

On the road
Driving
Steering is over-light and doesn't have much feel, but it does stick to corners and is very easy to drive.
Performance
Sprightly acceleration for the engine size, and power delivery is smooth. Engine generally very quiet, though low gearing means it's noisy at high speeds.

Living with it
Reliability
None of the reliability the company is so reputed for. Almost constant problems one way or another. Probably an abused example.
Image
Not such a bad looking car. And there are far fewer on the roads than the fastback models. Having said that, it is very similar to other Japanese hatchbacks of the time.
Comfort
A fairly roomy Focus-sized hatchback. No frills - a heater, tape/radio, central locking, power steering, that's about it. Though it does have a clutch footrest, which is welcome. Seats are comfortable enough.

Security and Service
Security
None whatsoever.
Service
The service itself was impeccable. Very polite and professional staff. Service and labour costs not too expensive.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Numerous occasions where it refused to start. First needed new ignition coil, then whole new distributor. Not cheap.
Other
Front box and catalytic converter corroded, needed replacement. Headlights would click off when they felt like it.
