Mazda 323 1.5 GXi 5d (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
2 grand cheaper than a comparable used Golf with an impressive extras list.
Costs
Standard parts seem reasonable, but replacement remote plipper expensive!

On the road
Driving
Independent suspension and Z split rear axle means fun, flat, fast cornering and the engine provides good output - however air con will sap power. Low speed ride a bit choppy, particularly over poor roads.
Performance
Good for engine size, with even power delivery, although runs out of grunt at 70 and needs a bit of winding up if you go any faster.

Living with it
Reliability
Too soon to tell, but clean bill of health so far.
Image
People either say "what is it" or "I know the/had a 323 they are really good". Far more individual than a Focus/Golf/Astra/Civic, yet just as capable.
Comfort
I am 6' 4" and have head and legroom in a car with an electric sunroof. Front seat that becomes a table is interesting. Good rear space and high boot line make useful capacity - struts intrude a bit, though.

Security and Service
Security
Thatcham 2 immobilisor, alarm, deadlocks plus a "whats that?" attitude that should put off the casual thief.
Service
Service reasonable price.
