Mazda CX-5 Estate (2012-2017) verdict
Should you buy a used Mazda CX-5 (2012-2017)?
If you need four-wheel drive, want a diesel SUV that you can still use in ULEZ or clean air zones, or just fancy something a bit different from the usual suspects such as a Nissan Qashqai or Ford Kuga, the Mazda CX-5 is an excellent choice. We wouldn’t normally recommend a pre-2015 diesel SUV as a used buy, but thanks to Mazda designing the CX-5 to meet Euro 6 from the start there’s no hesitation here.
There are a couple of drawbacks to the Mazda, of course – the petrol version is thirsty and not particularly refined, and the body is not as rust-resistant as 21st century used car buyers have come to expect of cars up to 15 years old. The latter is easily resolved by spending some time finding a good one and investing in some rustproofing, and the former issue really isn’t a problem when you can choose a 150hp 2.2 diesel with low road tax, or a 175hp version with all-wheel drive and still impressive economy.
Interior trim and technology can feel dated next to rivals, but if that’s not a priority when choosing your next used car the Mazda CX-5 is an excellent second hand family SUV we can recommend.
What we like about the Mazda CX-5
Engaging handling, secure AWD designed to perform well in poor weather conditions as well as provide some off-road ability, torquey and generally reliable 2.2-litre diesel engines, ULEZ compliant from the beginning.
What we don’t like
Can be expensive to service, though not as expensive as if it’s neglected. Paint can age badly, and cosmetic rust can be an issue suggesting more serious problems lie ahead if not proactively prevented. The petrol model could be more refined.
