Mercedes-AMG EQE verdict
Should you buy one?
The lozenge-shaped Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 is like no other electric car on sale right now. It’s very good, too – as it’s more relevant to more people than the super-large EQS and, thanks to its performance, more appealing than the (admittedly much cheaper) Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+. The big question is whether we’d take one over an Audi E-Tron GT or Porsche Taycan, and that’s a harder question to answer, given how good they are – especially the latter.
We like the direction this car is taking AMG – it’s focused on handling, with the uncanny ability to cover ground almost comically fast. Its acceleration is so quick in give-and-take driving that it’s capable of rearranging your internal organs. For many people, that will be enough to allow it to wear its AMG badging convincingly.
We’re not so sure about its sci-fi soundtrack. It’s certainly different, and will divide opinions, but is it enough to make this our preferred choice over a Porsche Taycan? We’ll let you know when we get the opportunity to drive it further on UK roads.
