Mercedes-Benz A-Class A170 CDI Classic 5d (98) (2001/X) Owner Review

-
Economy
Value
Seems dear until you look at the standard spec - Ford Focus with same kit costs a lot more.
Costs
Cheap running costs - astounding fuel economy, cheap insurance, excellent dealers, reasonable servicing costs.
-
On the road
Driving
Excellent handling and visibility, but let down by creaking driver's seat, rock hard suspension, and lack of reach adjust on the steering wheel.
Performance
Hard to argue with a car that will cruise at 90mph yet return 50-60mpg in regular use.
-
Living with it
Reliability
No that great - mine has done only 8000 miles from new but needs tailgate fixed (again), driver's seat creaks, front suspension rattles, alarm is tempremental, handbrake needs adjusted.
Image
Brilliant concept works well in practice.
Comfort
More room inside than a Golf , rear child booster seats are brilliant, front seats lack side support.

Security and Service
Security
Excellent roster of standard-fit safety kit, excellent Euro NCAP crash test rating (safer than a VW Passat), but no deadlocks.
Service
The best dealer service I have ever experienced.
