Should you buy one?

Yes, although with some provisos. The list of small, premium MPVs currently on sale is tiny, so if the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is too firm and a bit too sporty for you, the B-Class is your only other option. In most regards though, the BMW is the better car and the stiffer suspension does at least make it feel a sharper thing when cornering.

Despite these reservations, the B-Class has a lot to offer, especially if you’re looking for a premium ownership experience, and appreciate the tech-heavy dashboard and interior. We also can’t help but think that it looks good inside and out. We would point out that a Volkswagen Touran is even more practical for the money, as is Mercedes-Benz’s seven-seat GLB, too.

It’s a shame you can’t buy a plug-in hybrid B250e, especially as this running gear is available in the A-Class and GLA models, as this would make it a whole lot more tax efficient.

What we like

It’s comfortable on the motorway and reasonably efficient, too. The availability of a diesel engine is a positive for those who cover long distances regularly.

What we don’t like

The boot isn’t as big as you’d hope, rivals are more practical and it gets pricey as you move up the range. Despite its lovely dashboard and controls, some of the interior plastics are disappointingly cheap-feeling, and out of place in a so-called premium car.
