Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate 96-

  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Terrific value now - hand built engine with 300+ bhp for bog standard car prices.

    Costs

    2 out of 5 2.0

It's not cheap. Petrol 20-24mpg tyres don't last long, some of the performance parts expensive. There again it is a performance car - servicing at 12k miles isn't bad.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Sure footed, involving and fun. Can decide to change gear just as you would rather it didn't but you get used to it. Practical estate that goes and handles like a sports car.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Push the accelerator all the way down and you hit the kickdown button - watch the rev counter spin round to the 6,600 rpm limiter. It really howls off into the distance. Trouble is after a while you get used to 306 bhp and then want more!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Not let me down but a couple of odd glitches...

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

About as understated as it's popssible to be it's why I chose it. Sometimes you wish there was a sign that said ""hey, this has the power of a 911""

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Seats are great for hurling the car around but start to feel a bit firm after a long drive. You can massage your back with the inflatable seat adjustment.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

    Not sure really...

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Only ever spoken to them on the phone!

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

sweet as a nut, or rather, sweet as a sweet.

    Other

Rain sensitive wipers iffy following new windscreen, wiper arm sticky (greased mechanism), brake light switch (common). No signs of wear and easily cleans up to look as new.
