Economy
Value
Expensive to buy new, and you can get more for your money from the likes of Volvo and Saab. Much better equipped than similar Audi or BMW though.
Costs
Dealer servicing is a rip-off, and the standard of workmanship is appalling. Avoid, use an independent specialist and benefit from lower labour rates and better levels of service.

On the road
Driving
Nice environment to be in, but the seats are a bit unsupportive on longer journeys. Stop every 2 hours as advised.
Performance
Even with the old 2-litre 4-pot, it accelerates well (even in 6th gear). Tremendous levels of grip through the bends, much better than the motoring press would have you believe.

Living with it
Reliability
Touch wood. No major problems in nearly 3yrs/76000 miles.
Image
3 pointed star will always make you look more posh than you are. If that's a good thing. Still, gets respect when you draw up at hotels and functions.
Comfort
Dual zone climate control, cruise control and a great ride make this a lovely car to drive. Shame about the seats though. Rear space not that great.

Security and Service
Security
No deadlocks but good alarm/immobiliser, plus tilt sensors.
Service
Not at all the "Mercedes experience" you are led to believe you will receive when you buy. Careless technicians rarely get the job fixed first time. Lack of product knowledge. Go to an independent specialist.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Even this 2-litre entry engine pulls well. Much better than the official figures suggest.
Other
Overall a fabulous car let down by its dealers. I'm buying a Volvo S60 next but will probably buy the new C-Class when it's launched in 2007. Mercedes have responded to the shoddy quality of their dealer servicing so should be well in place by then.
