Pros & cons
Astoundingly fast, thunderous engines, luxury cabin, superb build quality
Expensive to buy and run, hardly understated, lacks sophisticated image of alternatives
Mercedes-Benz CL AMG (07-14) rivals
Overview
The Mercedes-Benz CL is designed to be the ultimate grand tourer – the equal to illustrious names like Aston Martin and Bentley – and the AMG is the more sport-focused version of this large coupé. There are actually two models – one using an enormous 6.2-litre V8 (Mercedes actually calls it a 6.3) and the other packing a 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12. Performance is as thunderous as you’d expect, but it’s not all about sheer power.
It also has a luxuriously appointed interior and space for four adults to travel in supreme comfort. It’s a rare beast but one with the ingredients to make it every bit as desirable as an Aston Martin DB9 or a Bentley Continental GT.
