Should you buy a Mercedes-Benz CLA?

That’s the sixty-four thousand dollar question, because in effect you’re paying more for less. An standard A-Class remains the better family car because of the greater practicality of its hatchback, but for drivers who prioritise eye-catching looks and compact dimensions, the second-generation CLA is a class act. So, if practicality is not high on your list, it’s a highly-recommended option.

It also remains in something of a sector of its own. The Audi A3 Saloon is an excellent all-rounder that you should take very seriously indeed. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is good, but the CLA pips it in our opinion. In fact, the CLA’s main competition comes from Mercedes-Benz – the A-Class Saloon.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA offers better cornering stability than its hatchback cousin and more than enough interior space for small families. For those reasons alone it’s worth considering as an alternative to regular compact saloons, because it certainly cuts a dash in the car park.

What we like

The classy looks and interior really do make you feel special. We’d even consider it over the larger Mercedes C-Class, especially if you’re likely to be the only person in the car most of the time. It looks and feels more special and is far more modern in terms of the equipment and technology on offer.

What we don’t like

While there’s a reasonably amount of choice, the engine range isn’t that inspiring. And, naturally given its shape, though rear passenger and boot space are decent for a car of this type they aren’t as generous as they can be in more conventional cars – small coupes like these can feel compromised in terms of practicality.
