Mercedes-Benz CLK Coupe (1997-2002) engines, drive and performance
The earlier 200 unit is a little lethargic – although this was replaced by a much fiercer supercharged 200K Kompressor engine. The 230K, 320 V6 and 430 V8 are all mightily impressive and great fun to drive. All versions accelerate at a rapid rate and the gearbox is just as effortless as you would expect from Mercedes-Benz.
There should be few nasty surprises when cornering, although the steering is disappointingly unresponsive and feels a little too numb. Overall, the ride is generally well balanced and reassured and the Coupé will cruise effortlessly for many motorway miles. However, despite the traction control system, the back end can still slide a little in slippery conditions and the ride can be rather uncompromising – especially in the Avantgarde and Sport editions.
