The AMG gets a darker interior than the standard E-Class, with options including Alcantara (synthetic suede) headlining. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable as well as the steering column so it is easy to get a perfect driving position. However, while the cabin has a sophisticated feel, it’s not especially sporty or special. The AMG instrument dials are neat though and there’s no denying the excellent build quality and finish.

The black wood finish isn’t to everyone’s taste but a carbon trim is available as an option.

Considering the immense performance on tap, the E-Class AMG is still cosseting when it needs to be and can effortlessly cover motorway miles with minimal road noise. The supercharger engine develops an unusual whining noise under acceleration, but this is absent in the later 6.2-litre engine – both are quiet at steady cruising speeds. There’s plenty of room inside and electronic climate control and electric windows are standard as you’d expect at this price.

Heated front seats are standard, while ventilated seats are optional on the E63.
