There’s been no individual test for the Mercedes E-Class Coupe safety levels by EuroNCAP, but the body has tested the saloon and estate the Coupe and Cabriolet are based on. And it’s good news, the E-Class having received five stars and a commendation for scoring maximum points in the side barrier test.

The firm’s new Intelligent Drive, debuting on the E-Class range, combines an array of safety systems to make the Coupe safer than ever too.

Along with nine airbags, the E-Class Coupe comes with Collision Prevention Assist and Attention Assist. The former uses a radar system to measure the distance to the car in front and if needs be utilises the car’s adaptive Brake Assist to prime the brakes and reduce the risk of a rear end collision. Attention Assist will monitor the driver’s behaviour and warn them if they should take a break while Pre-Safe prepares the car for an impending accident by closing windows and tightening the seatbelts.

Additionally there are a number of other high-tech options available to keep E-Class Coupe occupants safe on the move. Pre-Safe Brake can now detect pedestrians and brake the car to a halt from 31mph.

Meanwhile Pre Safe Plus recognises any imminent rear collision and warns the driver behind of the car’s presence by rapid activation of the hazard lights. Should this not be enough warning, it will then apply the brakes fully to lessen the movement after the impact. In a similar vein Pre-Safe Impulse can pull occupants away from the point of impact by their seatbelts.

Active Lane Keeping Assist keeps the vehicle in its lane when the adjacent one isn’t clear, Active Highbeam Assist allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on without dazzling other road users and Traffic Sign Assist now recognises no overtaking signs and access restriction signs in addition to speed limit warnings.

Four usable seats are key to the Mercedes E-Class Coupe practicality levels being rated so highly. Certainly this coupe boasts more cabin space than many of its rivals; the feeling of space, in the rear seats especially, helped by the pillar-less side windows.

Oddiment storage throughout the cabin is good too, with an air-conditioned glovebox and deep storage bin in the centre console – though this space is used for connecting your mobile media device. Moving the automatic gearlever from the transmission tunnel to the centre console has freed up even more space.

But it’s the boot that impresses the most, and this classy coupe is perfectly capable of carrying up to 450-litres of luggage. To put that into perspective, the latest Ford Focus (a family car remember) can only hold 316-litres.
