Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate (86-)
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

    For a 7-seater, it's a bargain. Cheaper than many similar-aged people carriers.

    Costs

    2 out of 5 2.0

Petrol? Automatic? Built like a Mercedes? Drinks petrol. Must be one of the least economical 2 litre cars around.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

On the open road, it's still smooth and quiet. Perfect for motorway driving and tootling round town.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Surprisingly good for an estate. The turbo doesn't exactly kick you in the pants, but it'll get you away from the lights faster than your average people carrier.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

150k miles, and still purring away. Not very fond of damp mornings, though.

It's a Mercedes! They don't need to know you only paid a couple of grand for it.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Comfortable seating all-round, but the rear-facing seats are uncomfortably small for adults. But don't let that stop you putting your friends back there. They still love giving the thumbs up to lorry drivers.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Central locking only. No standard alarm.

    Service

    4 out of 5 4.0

Don't waste your money on authentic Mercedes parts and service on a car this old. Third-party spares will do you just fine.

  • Problems and Ownership
