Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate 230 TE 5d (W124) (1992/J) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
I overpaid on book value by about £1,000, but these are in big demand where I live.
Costs
The 2.3 is about the best balance between economy and power.
-
On the road
Driving
I drove 1,000 miles on French autoroutes last summer and it was a pleasure - even on the Paris peripherique.
Performance
A bit sluggish, but the auto gearbox can be worked to give the required 'oomph'.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Have replaced rear discs and suspension-levelling pipes, otherwise fine.
Image
There are dozens of these estates in central Edinburgh where I live and they look perfectly at home with the BMW/Merc/Porsche elite.
Comfort
My father-in-law describes as a mobile couch - fair enough.
-
Security and Service
Security
Remote locking/alarm ok. Could use an immobiliser.
Service
Go to an independent specialist - dealers are outrageous for a car this age.
-
Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
New thermostat and radiator cap.
Other
Slight upholstery wear - leather better.
