Summary
What does this car say about you?
My wife thinks it's a bit old fashioned but I like the fact it is subtle. I can leave it anywhere and everyone ignores it. My mates who know cars agree with my logic in buying it, it's very sensible, but you have to live with the 'sensible' image.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
My neighbours think I must be doing well! they don't realise that it is cheaper to buy than their new corsa/jazz/fiesta/yaris! My Dad has an E class so he clearly approves. Friends/colleagues drive similar size cars and like this one - I have converted a couple to buying merc.
Would you buy this car again and why?
I will probably replace it with the facelift version, maybe a hybrid motor, but definatley an e class estate again.
What are you likely to buy next?
Another E class. In 8 months and 15k miles this is costing less to run than my old picasso. Service has just cost £530 including two tyres and new brake pads - i'll take that.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Independent
Did you buy this car new?
No
What price did you pay?
£8,995
When did you buy the car?
July 2015
Did you get a good deal and why?
Reasonable. I paid top whack but it was a very precise spec I wanted. The dealer specialises in MB/BMW of this vintage and quality. Got a full service, full MOT, all the alloys refurbed and a tank of diesel thrown in.
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
Wanted Merc reliability and comfort for my work miles. Wanted estate practicality. Wanted 7 seat option. Also after 20 years of bangernomics I wanted a proper car!
What was the dealer like?
Nice chap. Semi retired and works from home so no pressure. Only deals by appointment.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
It's not sporty but the 220 diesel is quick enough 95% of the time. Having driven the e280 (v6 diesel) they are that bit quicker but worth the savings on running costs for the smaller engine. Very relaxing on long runs. I can do a 10 hour day in it and not be achy. Heated seats are lovely.
What's it like to park?
Excellent turning circle and good front and rear parking sensors mean it's easy to park. It is however longer than many multi story parking spaces!

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
Blew one fuse on the rear lighter socket. That's it.
What's most practical about your car?
Size. I can take my family of five camping for the weekend including kids bikes with everything in the boot. 7 seat option ok for occasional use, but if you need them every day they're not great.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
The auto wipers/climate/lights/cruise give a very relaxing drive especially in horrid weather on our rubbish motorways.
