Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon 260 E 4d Auto (W124) (1987/E) Owner Review

Economy
Value
I can't think of any other car worth about £1500 that I wouldn't be embarrased to park in Knightsbridge.
Costs
Three things new owners need: Service info on CD Ron from Ebay, Euro Car Parts catalogue and decent basic servicing skills.

On the road
Driving
Surprisingly chuckable for such a big tank. Surprises hot hatches if you don't mind a bit of oversteer in the damp! But not on the roads, of course!
Performance
Same as driving really. Doesn't feel quick, but makes surprisingly swift progress in the real world.

Living with it
Reliability
240,000 miles and nothing worse than 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles. Supremely reliable.
Image
Doesn't look too ostentatious. Sensible size and universally respected as a 'good choice'.
Comfort
Not as spacious as an S class, I grant you, but not £50,000 less comfortable!

Security and Service
Security
Where there's a will there's a way, but it's solid and not easily broken into. Mine has a Cat.1 security system fitted.
Service
Not rich enough to afford MB dealer servicing! Been very helpful when ordering parts though. And surprisingly reasonable on price too!

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Slight oil deposits on cylinders 3 and 5. Water pump leak (£70 and two hours in my driveway). Alternator failed on way home from Goodwood (not MB's fault - Bosch alternator and was 14 years old, after all).
Other
You really can't fault these for the money. So solid and effortless to drive. I regularly do London to Newcastle non-stop and I've yet to get out feeling stiff! Top marks to MB for the whole W124 series.
