Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon (1995-2002) engines, drive and performance

Engines range from 2.0-litre four cylinders up to 4.3-litre V8. Mid sized V6 units are the best compromise. Pre-’99 turbo diesels are economical but only fit for commercial applications. Later CDi units are much better.
Feels very secure and safe to drive with an excellent ride quality from the supple suspension. It grips well in corners although feels rather heavy and slow to respond to sudden inputs.
