Mercedes-Benz EQB boot space, practicality and safety
- Seven seats but rear-most are best for occasional use only
- Okay-ish boot space compared with rivals
- Good headroom for everyone in the first five seats
How much space is there?
Technically the EQB is a seven-seater. But we prefer to think of it as a roomy five-seater with the option to occasionally carry two extra passengers. While tall adults won’t fit in the third row, it should be comfortable for pre-teens and bearable for adults up to about 5’4”. The middle row also slides forward, allowing you to balance everybody’s legroom needs.
The EQB is at least as spacious as a Land Rover Discovery Sport (a non-electric seven-seater SUV) or a Tesla Model Y (a five-seater electric SUV), though it’s slightly narrower than both. Isofix points are provided in both rear rows, allowing you up to four child seats back there.
Boot space and storage
Boot space is almost non-existent with all three rows of seats occupied. You get 465 litres in five-seat mode, which isn’t class-leading but is still a practical, usable space. This expands to a square, flat-floored 1,320 litres with all the rear seats folded. The Tesla Model Y has a much larger boot, but it doesn’t get seven seats.
The EQB scores well for storage areas. There are deep door pockets, quite a few cubbyholes dotted around, wireless phone charging brings with it somewhere to stick your phone, and there are luggage nets on the backs of the front seats, perfect for kids to cram electronics and biscuit wrappers into.
Is it easy to park?
The EQB is a fairly square car with large door mirrors and windows, which means it’s easy to see out of.
As a result, despite its size, it’s easy to park. This is aided by a standard fit reversing camera, which is clear and easy to use.
Safety
- Five-star safety rating
- Impressive tally of 16 airbags
- Adaptive cruise an option
Euro NCAP, the European safety authority, awarded the EQB five stars out of five in 2021. It scored particularly well in adult occupant crash tests, and it has several state-of-the-art safety systems, including an Active Bonnet that improves pedestrian safety.
The only real optional extra is the Driving Assistance Package, which is well worth specifying. Not only does it include adaptive cruise control, it adds blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist and pedestrian warnings.
