Mercedes-Benz GLC verdict
Should you buy one?
Yes, as long as you don’t mind paying the premium. There are plenty of reasons to recommend a Mercedes-Benz GLC, especially if you appreciate a relaxing ride. The impressive electric-only range of the plug-in hybrid models is reason enough for those living in Ultra-Low Emission Zones. Its techno-flash interior and generous passenger space are certain to appeal, too.
It’s not without its faults, though. Yes, it’s very competent on the motorway, but there are plenty of rival SUVs that are better to drive on twisty roads, such as the BMW X3. And while its interior looks sharp, it doesn’t share the same rigorous build quality as the Audi Q5. We’d have liked to see a few more physical buttons on the dashboard, too.
What we like
The Mercedes GLC comes with a generous amount of standard equipment and the PHEV models’ 60-plus mile electric range is class-leading (although someway shy of its claimed 80 miles we found). We like how sharp and responsive the infotainment system is and there’s plenty of space inside for four passengers.
What we don’t like
It isn’t particularly enjoyable to steer and you really feel the added bulk of the PHEV system in the bends. The low-speed ride is fidgety on 20-inch wheels, interior quality isn’t as good as it first appears and the touch controls on the steering wheel annoy.
