No matter how efficient an engine is, this car weighs at least 2.2 tonnes. It’s clear Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe running costs are going to be pretty high. Claimed average fuel economy ranges from 39.2mpg for the GLE350d diesel to 31.7mpg for the GLE450 AMG version. Neither of those numbers are particularly impressive, but neither are very likely either. A heavy, aerodynamically challenged car like this is likely to be some way off the claimed combined figures the firm quotes.
Insurance won’t be cheap either, since this ultimately is a high-value, high-performance vehicle. Emissions between 187g/km and 209g/km also exclude it from pretty much all company car lists.
In terms of CO2, the best Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe emissions are – predictably – from the diesel GLE350d with 187g/km. That’s still not exactly clean. You’ll want to go for a hybrid model to get better, but that’s only available on the SUV version of the GLE.
There shouldn’t be much to worry about here. Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe reliability should be every bit as good as the GLE SUV it’s based on, and since that car is actually the old M-Class underneath, we don’t foresee too many issues. There weren’t any major recalls and we haven’t heard any horror stories to be aware of. It currently scores an average of four stars in our Mercedes-Benz GLE owners’ reviews too.
Our only concern is that the GLE450 AMG engine is new, and the nine-speed automatic gearbox too. The latter is incredibly complex, so there’s a lot to go wrong.
