Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster (1996-2004) engines, drive and performance
The SLK’s supercharged four-cylinder engines offer sparkling, smooth performance. The popular 200K that you’ll usually find in 2000-on models is brisk; the SLK 320’s 3.2 V6 is creamily refined, but it’s not that much quicker than the original 2.3-litre 230K – to get the best out of it you’ll want the rarer six-speed manual version.
The rare 350hp AMG version is wickedly quick, but it was not significantly different in setup for handling, remaining on the safe, rather than wild side of manners.
Designed for cruising rather than tearing up twisty alpine roads so don’t expect razor sharp responses. It handles safely, the ride is typically Mercedes-Benz. Two seats and compact size aside, the SLK is a compact GT rather than a focused, track-tuned sports car.
